What is St Louis really like? I know nothing about it. How is it different than the northeast? Any comment about you're neighborhood/area would be helpful.

The things I would recommend as starting points to people unfamiliar with the St. Louis is forest park in the middle of the city, which includes the zoo, which is on par with San Diego, the Art museum, Missouri History Museum, Science center/Planetarium, and Steinberg skating rink. All of those are free, with the exception of the ice rink. The park is next to the Central West End neighborhood, which is the hospital district where a lot of doctors live, so there are plenty high end shops and restaurants. The Hill is a Little Italy sort of district full of Italian immigrants and the best restaurants this side of anywhere. It's where Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola grew up. It's definitely a sports town, which only rings truer when you realize how many games the Rams continue to sell out. Another area I would recommend is Lafayette Square, one of the most dramatically transformed neighborhoods in the city. A nice park, excellent restaurants, and gorgeous architecture, nice for just walking around. The Demar Loop is always a happening place too, about a mile long stretch of restaurants, shops, concert venues and movie theaters, tends to be a bit of a hipster hangout. Downtown is kinda slow but is making its comeback, Washington Avenue is turning into Main Street, with tons of loft conversions and nightlife. Our downtown opera house just reopened as well. Midtown is also making a turnaround, as it's the Fine Arts Center of St. Louis, housing the Fox Theater and the St. Louis symphony's Powell Hall, as well as a jazz club and many other fine arts organizations. The crime is there, same as every other city, and it gets really patchy block by block in some places, but its like anywhere else. Don't get involved in anything shady, use your head, don't poke your nose where you know it doesn't belong, and you'll be just fine. People who like to hate on St Louis have either never been here or didn't know what to do once they got here. We're always hearing stories of people coming from NYC expecting boarded up buildings and everything to be absolutely dead, and they're blown away by whats actually here. Sorry for being so long winded, I love my hometown, moved away for work and I'm already homesick
